Social stereotypes =0 , Love and Liberty = 1
I was in the middle of my class , when my phone
notifications popped up. 2015 UPSC toppers Rank 1 Tina Dabi and Rank 2 Athar
Amir khan tie knots. It wasn’t that I was friends with either of them, it was
just the newspaper app that I had in my phone giving me the regular updates. I
was sitting in this UPSC coaching class, so this news seemed quite relevant to
me, not because I am in love with someone but just because I see this as a
challenge to all the senseless and stupid boundaries that people try to draw
around us , trying to curb our liberty in every sphere of life. As I live
away from home, it has become a norm to call my parents every evening around
7-8 pm. That’s when I called them. I was in the middle of the conversation when
I thought of telling them about the amazing news I got to know that day. I
definitely knew that it won’t be as amazing for them because they too have
certain views which won’t go very well along with this.
Me : Mummy, wo 2015 wali topper thi na TINA Dabi usne shadi
krli. ( Mummy, that 2015 topper Tina Dabi got married.)
I was thinking of giving it to them in small doses.
Me (again) : usne na love marriage ki hai , jo us saal ka 2nd
ranker tha uske sath.
Mummy : (laughing ) Achcha beta apna rasta saaf kar rhey ho.
(Well , you are trying to clear your own way.)
I played along. I didn’t want to start another debate then
because I usually get in a lot of debates with my parents over what is right
and wrong. I was already tired by that time due to the hectic day so I never
mentioned the fact that it was an inter religion marriage.
But as I have slept enough now, I am ready to start the
debate anytime soon (:P).
While many people appreciated the fact that the duo get
married and congratulated them over social media, there were a bunch of people
who registered their contempt of the marriage through social media posts. Some
even went to the limit of calling it a “Love jihad” while some enquired about
the religion of their future children. Still the people in support were more
than the haters. While I wanted to dance with rejoice at this changing picture
of the mentality of the people I couldn’t. It was quite easy for them to
support the cause on the social media, maybe just to increase the count of
likes and followers on their accounts. But how many of them would accept their
children marrying someone from the other religion? How many of them would marry
someone from the other religion? In our society, where inter-caste is a taboo
and inter- religion is considered sinister, will they dare to stand against the
so called “samaj”? Well I guess no. The country seems to have a different population in the digital world. And this double life that people live on
social media and in reality and the double standards they apply are as concerning as the people
who posted against the marriage.
There was a preacher once. He used to preach a lot , a lot
about all the modern world ideas, liberties, truthfulness and everything
amazing. As an audience you would think that this man is just next to God in
his ideas and beliefs. In his real life though he was an extreme conservative ,
a murderer and did all kind of sinister crimes what one could ever imagine of. One
day he was caught and taken to the jury.
Jury : You preach so many good things while you yourself are
such an evil person. Why don’t you practice what you preach?
To this , that man replied quite cleverly.
Man: As a preacher, I am bound to preach but not to practice
the same.
So that’s what most of the supporters on social media do. It
is good that they could post such modern world ideas but it is time to change outlook in your real life too.
Such inter-religion and inter-caste marriages are the need
of the hour to dilute all the group identities and bring people on moderate
stances on such group identity issues.
In the end, this is just not about inter-religion marriage
but this is more about Right to choice, Right to live and Liberty. This is about
people’s duty to respect others’ rights.
Congrats Tina and Amir for doing what you did, for leading
not by words but by example.
Moral : Live and Let Live.
